Video assessments
Support for recording and uploading of videos for assessment.
This information will help you with the technical aspects of recording and uploading videos. If you are having technical difficulties, it is always best to check the basics first, such as "is it switched on". However, if you have any technical issues, IT Support Services may be able to help.
Recording video
The camera needs to be set up (or held by another person) to ensure that there is a good view of you and/or your partner performing the education with a patient. Everyone needs to be aware of where the camera is so that the view of the scene is not blocked at any point during the filming. If we are unable to see relevant parts of the education being done due to poor angles, we cannot fairly consider it done adequately as you will not have shown us this.
Therefore, be really aware of ensuring you are visibly performing for the camera to optimise the demonstration.
The recording device needs to be able to adequately pick up sound from the scene as it is performed.
Select a quiet location where there will be very little background noise and ensure the microphone on the recording device is not covered.
Ensure you speak clearly and loudly enough for your voice to be picked up by the recording device.
Ideally, you should do a test recording to check that the recording device will pick up your voice from where you stage your scene.
Usually filming can be done using your phone or tablet.
To keep file size low, we recommend adjusting you camera settings record in HD 720p at 30 fps.
Optional: 1080p HD at 30 fps if higher quality is needed. Please avoid 4K as it creates very large files. You can adjust your camera resolution in your device settings:
Apple: Settings → Camera → Record Video → choose 720p HD 30 fps or 1080p HD 30 fps.
Android: Camera app → Settings (⚙️) → Video size/resolution → select 720p 30 fps or 1080p 30 fps.
Android version 10 and under has a file size limit of 4GB. This translates to approximately 13 minutes of recording time. If you reach this file limit it will stop the recording and you will need to start a new one.
Android version 11 has expanded the file size to 10GB which allows over 30 minutes.
Apple iPhone and iPad does not usually have a file size limit meaning you can keep recording until it runs out of space.
In either Android or Apple devices, both will stop recording if the storage reaches capacity. You can go to your device settings and check storage to know how much space is free.
If you are filming and have run out of space on your device, you should be able to upload the video to a computer or cloud (see below) and then delete the file from your device to continue filming (please check the file transfer has been successful first!).
Uploading/Transferring videos
Once you have finished your video, you will need to transfer the video from your phone/tablet to a computer/cloud service for safe keeping and to submit it for assessment.
To edit together several videos you may find it easier to transfer your videos from your recording device to your computer so you can use editing software.
File transfers
- If uploading from an Android phone to an Apple device you may need to download an Android File Transfer app.
- With a USB cable, connect your phone to your computer.
- Unlock your phone so the computer can find it.
- On your phone, tap the "Charging this device via USB" notification.
- Under "Use USB for," select File Transfer.
- A file transfer window will open on your computer. Use it to drag files.
- When you're done, eject your phone from Windows and unplug the USB cable.
- Connect your iPhone to a PC with a USB cable that can transfer files.
- Turn your phone on and unlock it. Your PC can’t find the device if the device is locked.
- On your PC, select the Start button and then select Photos to open the Photos app.
- Select Import > From a USB device, then follow the instructions. You can pick the items you want to import and select where to save them. Allow a few moments for detection and transfer.
You can upload video directly from your device (phone/tablet/laptop) to your OneDrive cloud storage.
You will need to have the OneDrive app installed for this which is available through Play Store or Apple Store. Once installed you can login to your Otago Polytechnic OneDrive from your device.
After sharing a video from your phone or device to the OneDrive, you can login to your laptop and access OneDrive from there, to access your videos for editing.
Editing video
There are free apps available to edit your videos if this is required. You may need to cut out excess video footage not relevant to the assessment and/or to splice together different short recordings into a single video.
Free video editors - Windows
Microsoft Windows 10 have a free video editor. Just type "video editor" in your search bar to find and open it. If you do not have it, you can download the Microsoft Clipchamp video editor for free.
Free video editors - iOS
Apple also provides a free video editor called iMovie. This can be found in the Applications folder. If it cannot be located on your Mac or iPad device, you can download the iMovie app for free from the App Store.
