Health and Wellbeing
Te Whare Tapa Whā is a model of wellbeing developed by Sir Mason Durie. It uses the four walls of a wharenui to represent spiritual, mental and emotional, physical, and whānau and social wellbeing, while connection to the whenua (land) forms the foundation. When these dimensions are in balance, we thrive.
Social and whānau health
Social health | Taha whānau includes all or your relationships, intimate and social, with whānau, friends, colleagues and community.
Mental and emotional health
Mental and emotional health | Taha Hinengaro is connected to your mental and emotional wellbeing - your thoughts, feelings, mood, decisions, motivation, and behaviour.
Spiritual health
Spiritual health | Wairua represents the spiritual wha (aspect) of wellbeing. This is what gives us meaning, purpose, and a deep sense of connection to ourselves, others, and the world around us.
Physical health
Physical wellbeing | Taha Tinana looks different for everyone, but it’s how your body feels, how you care for it, how you move, and how you nourish it.
